Graphic Design + Illustration Program

The School of Visual Art + Design at The University of South Carolina

We don’t just follow the rules, we create them.

  • Think.

The graphic design program teaches the theory, history and practice of visual communications design by providing students a firm foundation in formal and conceptual design. Our courses cover publication and editorial design, logo design and branding, packaging, illustration, poster design, multimedia, motion graphics and interactive design.

  • Build.

It is the mission of the UofSC graphic design faculty to make our students as competitive and prepared for the working world as possible. We want this transition from student to professional to be seamless. Graphic design, at its most effective, should communicate intelligently and appropriately to the intended audience.

  • Grow.

Solving client-based requirements is a major component of the designers' task in our program and in the profession. Our curriculum reflects modern-day design thinking and problem solving.

Applying to GD+I

The Graphic Design + Illustration BFA does require a portfolio submission for 300-level courses and above. The GD+I Portfolio Review takes place every Spring semester. Students submit their portfolio and statement of intent after successfully completing ARTS102 or ARTS246. See our GD+I FAQ here.

Once admitted, students take a tiered series of design and illustration courses including product, packaging, interaction, motion design, traditional and digital illustration. There is no application required to minor.

For more information about the application process see our Portfolio Review FAQ Session here or contact Stephanie Nace at NACE@mailbox.sc.edu.
